12 US States Just Hit Record COVID-19 Case Counts; It Could Be The Dreaded 2nd Wave

Across the US, coronavirus outbreaks seem to be larger than ever before. On Saturday, 12 states hit record seven-day rolling average case counts, according to a Business Insider analysis of data from The COVID Tracking Project, which compiles data from state and territory-level public health authorities.

Most New York City firefighters retired with $100,000-plus annual pensions last year

More than three-quarters of FDNY employees who retired last year qualified for annual pensions exceeding $100,000 — with many awarded extra because of disabilities related to 9/11, a new study and data reveal. Forty of the 491 retirees landed gold-plated pensions of more than $200,000 a year, according to the study by the Empire Center for Public Policy.

San Antonio firefighters donate their own blood to save lives

They’re the first on the scene at major trauma events and this weekend, San Antonio firefighters, EMS and police officers were the first in line to give back to the community by donating blood. Conrad Gonzales, a retired San Antonio firefighter, felt he needed to step up when he heard that the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center’s blood supply continues to be at an all-time low, due to the pandemic.

Crews battle flames, explosions at Tacoma asphalt plant

VIDEO: Mechanical problems at a Tacoma industrial plant are the likely cause for an early morning fire that triggered explosions and spewed toxic chemicals into the air. It took several hours for Tacoma firefighters to put the fire out but a special Hazmat Team that prepares for these types of fires helped minimize the impact on the environment and made sure nobody got hurt.

Shoreline coffee shop receives outpouring of support following arson attack

Black Coffee Northwest in Shoreline, Washington was set to open earlier this month but had to postpone after they were hit by an arsonist. On Saturday, the news of their soft opening had spread and lines of cars stretched around the block. “As crazy as the world is right now this is just a breath of fresh air,” said Erwin Weary, the co-owner of the Black-owned coffee shop.
