A fire in a Kennewick apartment Tuesday night forced two families out of their homes. Two women called 911 about 6:15 p.m. when they noticed smoke coming from the wall of their 21st Avenue apartment. Kennewick firefighters soon figured out the smoke was coming from the apartment below, said Kennewick Fire Capt.

Crews were able to quickly contain a fire that broke out in a Hillyard neighborhood home, but damages are still estimated to be in the thousands. According to the Spokane Fire Department, the fire in the 3800 block of E. Broad Avenue was contained and extinguished within ten minutes of crews arriving at the scene.

Getting a ride in an Everett Fire ambulance will now cost more. The City Council just approved a set of rate increases to help Everett Fire match what other fire agencies in the region charge. For Everett, a basic EFD ambulance ride will be $680, up from $488. An ambulance ride providing first-level advanced life support services will cost $890, up from $694; second-level advanced care will cost $980, up from $800.

VIDEO: A statewide minimum wage increase that went into effect this year never came for Raton firefighters after city officials said they were unaware that the new law overruled the contract they had with the firefighters union. The county’s Emergency Services Department Board unanimously motioned to end its contracts with volunteer fire departments that protect a large chunk of El Paso County Tuesday night, leaving many firefighters worried for their futures. Six El Paso area fire departments say they were given a 90-day notice that the county is looking at terminating their contracts and with no plan in place that they’re aware of, the firefighters worry what this means for the communities they serve.
