8-year-old dies in Snohomish County house fire

An eight-year-old girl died and four others were burned in a fire that broke out in a Snohomish County house on Monday. A family of five was in the house at the time of the fire, including the 8-year-old and a 7-year-old. The call came in about 1:30 a.m. for a fire at a home on Dotson Road near Cedar Ponds Road, which is about two miles south of Sultan.

Overheated extension cord sparks blaze at south Seattle home; kids escape

VIDEO: An overheated extension cord is being blamed for a fire that gutted a two-story home Monday in South Seattle, emergency officials said. Crews responded to the scene, in the 10000 block of Beacon Avenue South, at around 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of smoke and flames billowing from a home there.

Spokane could deploy goats to tame wildfire fuel

Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer is looking to hire scores of new firefighters. They’ll each stand some 20 inches tall and have four legs capped by cloven hooves. Schaeffer calls them biological masticators, herbivores or browsers. But most people probably know them as goats. Schaeffer and Councilwoman Lori Kinnear are proposing that the city of Spokane pilot a program to bring trips of goats into the city’s overgrown areas to chow down – all with the hope of reducing wildfire risk.

Man who bought ‘residential’ firehouse sued by Seattle for using as residence

The advertisement that grabbed Thom Kroon's attention marketed a no-longer-used fire station as a "unique residential dwelling.” So Kroon purchased the property from the City of Seattle in a 2012 auction. Kroon told KIRO 7 he “thought we had essentially bought a residential property” for $712,000. The Seattle man then spent thousands of dollars on interior remodeling, and for more than three years, his extended family and friends used the firehouse for holidays, celebrations, charity fundraisers, graduation parties and as an office until a Land Use Notice of Violation arrived in July of 2016.
