The Vancouver Fire Department received $937,000 in federal grant money for new equipment and training programs, the department announced Friday.
The funds come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and will be used for two projects: replacing 107 outdated breathing apparatus units and providing specialized training in responding to hazardous materials.

The Pasco Fire Department are now keeping an eye on their parking lot after some firefighters had their cars broken into.
Sometime on Monday night or Tuesday morning, thieves broke into two cars in the parking lot of their fire station on Oregon Avenue. Several things were taken including an external hard drive, sunglasses, a medical kit and more.

The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is doing a 60-acre prescribed burn near Plain.
The burn is about two miles northwest of Plain, according to an Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest news release. Winds are predicted to be calm today with possible gusts of 5 mph out of the west in the afternoon, according to a news release.

Wildfire smoke has been an unwelcome guest in Puget Sound the past two summers, with acrid, yellow smoke polluting the air and clogging lungs. Warnings about the health risks have been issued. Seattle is setting up filtered air "breathing rooms." Mayor Jenny Durkan has declared that Seattle be "Smoke Ready" as residents are told to expect more smoke, more frequently as the climate warms and Northwest summers get hotter and drier.

A structural beam from the fallen towers of 9/11 has found its forever home at the Eastsound Fire Station on Orcas Island. Its journey began as many as 50 years ago with the construction of the original World Trade Center in New York City, where it remained steadfast for over thirty years – until tragedy struck.
