VIDEO: A humid day in Mattapan did not slow the pace of an intense basketball game between teachers from Mattahunt Elementary School and a team from the Boston Fire Department.
Kimberly Hogan, part of the teacher’s team, said her student spectators were thrilled to watch.

An artist who has painted scenes around the world will unveil a new mural design for Philadelphia on July 3 to honor an organization that has protected the city for hundreds of years — the city Fire Department.
A 500-square-foot mural depicting the history of the Philadelphia Fire Department will be painted on 4th and Arch streets, next to the Ladder 2 Fire Station and around the corner from the Fireman’s Hall Museum.

PHOTOS: The Seattle area may be one of the least thunderstormy places in the nation, but even our occasional thunderstorms can pack a punch.
Stop laughing, Midwest.
The National Weather Service office in Seattle estimated that about 20-30 cloud-to-ground total lightning strikes were detected amid a few thunderstorms that roamed across Western Washington Thursday afternoon, including cells on near the coast and in Lewis County, in addition to some reported strikes near Tacoma and along the SR-167/I-405 corridor in Pierce and King County.

Better think twice about lighting off fireworks in Bellevue this year. The city is empowering all citizens to report illegal displays with a new app feature, and police and firefighters will be out doing special emphasis patrols this year to catch scofflaws.
First, the basics: it is totally illegal to use fireworks in Bellevue.

A blaze next to a busy Kennewick street led to road closures while firefighters worked to keep it away from nearby businesses.
A fire ignited at the intersection of Kellogg Street and Deschutes Avenue shortly after 2:15 p.m. Thursday. The blaze threatened a nearby storage business.
To combat it, the firefighters closed Kellogg Street from Clearwater Avenue.
