Port Townsend mayor, East Jefferson fire-rescue chief describe details of proposed annexation

A measure on the Feb. 12 special election ballot aims to simplify the arrangement for fire protection in Port Townsend, according to proponents who spoke at a Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce meeting. The ballot measure, which needs a simple majority for passage, will ask voters to approve annexation of the city of Port Townsend into East Jefferson Fire-Rescue (EJFR), which now provides fire and emergency medical services in Port Townsend by contract.

USSC Group, LLC, Acquires Vista Brake Lock, LLC

EXTON, PA—USSC Group,  (USSC), a manufacturer of custom seating and fire suppression products for the transit, military and first responder markets today announced the acquisition of Vista Brake Lock, LLC. Vista Brake Lock, located in Sanford, Florida, manufactures and sells innovative safety and security systems for all emergency vehicles. Invented by Randy Smathers, a 34-year career firefighter, and retired Division Chief, Vista Brake Lock for apparatus equipped with air brakes, and Vista Park Lock for apparatus with automatic transmission shifters are designed to prevent theft of emergency vehicles while on a call.

"This acquisition comes as part of USSC's ongoing commitment to protect the men and women who serve our communities as emergency service professional," said Joseph Mirabile, President and CEO, USSC Group. "VISTA is a welcomed addition to our portfolio of brands and extend and strengthen our capabilities to offer our customers innovative safety solutions for commercial and military transportation markets."

Some of the biggest departments are now specifying both safety and security devices on all new apparatus orders," stated Randy Smathers. "USSC's leadership will ensure VISTA is the product of choice across many new markets while strengthening the Fire and EMS markets."

"USSC's focus is new technologies that improve safety and asset protection for our customers," emphasized, Ray Melleady, EVP, USSC Group. "The Vista Brake patented technology prevents unauthorized use of equipment and accidental roll aways which, unfortunately, are far too common in public transportation operations."

USSC Group will bring the manufacturing of (VISTA) to their headquarters in Exton, PA., where they will integrate the manufacturing into their product line.

State AG investigating if 911 outage affected you

The recent 911 outage sent dispatch centers across the Northwest scrambling, but the Tri-Cities appears to have escaped any serious problems. On Tuesday, state Attorney General Bob Ferguson issued a call for people affected by last month’s 911 outage to contact his office. It came days after dispatch center leaders gathered to talk about how they handled the emergency calls that failed to ring through to police and fire dispatchers for more than 12 hours.

City review finds pervasive ‘locker room talk’ in Boston firehouses

A city-commissioned review to be released Tuesday found pervasive “locker room talk” and an unwelcoming culture toward women in the largely male ranks of the Boston Fire Department and urged city officials to take several steps to boost the number of women on the force. Just 16 women are in the 1,500-member Fire Department, which has been criticized three separate times for its culture over the past 19 years.
