Pennsylvania mayor ends stepped-up fire watch schedule that union railed against

The mayor has ended a stepped-up fire watch program that has been criticized heavily as a waste of resources by the city’s firefighters union. In a press release issued Saturday, Mayor Tony George stated: “At this time, after evaluating all of the available data and information collected over the past two months, the decision has been made to restore the prior Community Fire Watch schedule.

Houston, firefighters association president clash in debate over pay ‘parity’ referendum

After months of trading barbs from a distance, Mayor Sylvester Turner and the head of Houston’s firefighters’ union met in a vigorous but civil debate Saturday, displaying their fundamental differences over just about everything related to the November ballot referendum that would grant firefighters pay “parity” with police officers of corresponding rank and seniority.

Everett marina evacuated as boathouse bursts into flames

An Everett marina was evacuated Monday morning after an intense fire broke out in a boathouse there. A fireboat and other crews responded to the scene, in the 1700 block of West Marine View Drive, at about 8 a.m. after receiving reports of smoke and flames. Police evacuated boaters from the Central "G" Dock at the Port of Everett while firefighters battled the flames, which sent a plume of black smoke towering over the Everett waterfront.

Woman attempts to burn pile of clothes on barbecue, fire spreads to Kennewick apartment deck

A fire meant to burn a pile of clothes spreads to an apartment deck in Kennewick. Firefighters were called out to the On The Boulevard apartment complex near Steptoe Street and West Gage Boulevard Saturday night. When crews got there, a fire was burning on an apartment deck. Once put out they discovered Kali Beacham, 21, attempted to burn a pile of clothes on the barbecue.

Two killed, two injured in fiery Hockinson crash

Two people were killed Saturday night and two injured, one of them with life-threatening injuries, in a single-car crash in the Hockinson area, Clark County authorities said. Rescuers responding to a 911 call made at 11:22 p.m. found the car on fire at Northeast 182nd Avenue and 139th Street. One of the dead victims — identified as Isabella P.
