Newell Road Fire 71% contained nearly one week after flames began

The Newell Road Fire burning near the Columbia River Gorge in Klickitat County is now 61,313 in size and 71% contained. On Tuesday, evacuation levels for the town of Roosevelt were reduced to a Level 1 “Be Ready” advisory. All other Evacuation areas remain unchanged, including Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation for residents in the Cleveland, Bickleton and Goodnoe Station areas.

Update: Fireworks ruled out as cause of fatal Mountlake Terrace townhouse fire

Fireworks have been ruled out as the cause of a fatal Mountlake Terrace townhouse fire, according to South County Fire officials who are still investigating the fire. Two women — ages 85 and 63 — died in the July 3 fire at the Lake Village Condominiums in the 22700 block of Lakeview Drive. Investigators found no evidence of fireworks in the area where the fire started, South County Fire spokesperson Leslie Hynes said.

Multiple city and state resources respond to small brush fire in Spokane

Spokane County Fire District 10 (SCFD10), Spokane County Fire District 3, The Washington State Department of Natural Recourses (DNR), the Airway Heights Fire Department, Fairchild Fire and the City of Spokane responded to a brush fire near the 9800 block of W. Euclid Avenue in Spokane. According to SCFD10, the fire was about 3 acres and was contained within 15 minutes.

Newly released video of exploding New Jersey apartment building shows impact of blast

New video shows the explosion and impact at an apartment building in Newark that injured six people and left 31 people displaced. There is still no word on what caused the explosion on South Pine Lane. The building, managed by Newark Housing Authority, was all but destroyed about 6 p.m. Friday after an explosion rocked the building.

Crane accidents are shockingly common; Here’s why they happen

When a fire broke out in the suspended operator’s cab of a massive construction crane in New York City early Wednesday, it didn’t take long for the structure, which was 45 stories high, to come crashing down. Within minutes, the top of the crane’s boom arm careened over like a falling tree, slamming its tip into the top of a building across the street before swinging down and crashing into the side of the building it had been constructing.
