Port Washington Fire Department rescues woman trapped under broken limb

First responders rescued an elderly woman Friday afternoon who had been trapped under a fallen tree limb at her home on Wakefield Avenue in Port Washington, the Port Washington Fire Department said. The woman received non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to North Shore University Hospital by the Nassau County Police Department Aviation Unit.

Wildfire ecologists say the state's wildfire seasons will last longer, cut deeper

The trick to fighting wildfires in the steep canyons of the north Cascades is to look for every available resource, even rock faces, to hold back and contain the flames, said veteran firefighter Alan Lawson. Hundreds of firefighters are using those tactics now against the more than 4,500-acre Sourdough fire in North Cascades National Park.

Spokane Firefighters contain fire: 'We shouldn't have to deal with fires that are preventable'

According to Fire District 3 Chief Cody Rohrbach, 90% of the fires we see in the Spokane area are caused by people, and this region is especially at risk. Our already-stretched thin fire crews battled a new fire today in Spokane city limits they say was caused by a homeless encampment. The Thorpe fire, off Highway 195 and Thorpe Road burned about 15 acres.

1 dead, dozens of structures destroyed as 3 wildfires burn in Spokane, Whitman Counties

VIDEOS: Fast-moving wildfires raced through Eastern Washington over the weekend, burning homes and prompting evacuation orders for thousands of people in small rural communities. One of the fires, the wind-driven the Gray Fire, has destroyed at least 185 structures, closed a major highway and left one person dead.

VIDEOS: 16 apartments destroyed by fire in South Carolina, official says

PHOTOS: More than a dozen apartments were destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon in Greenville County, South Carolina. The fire started just before 1 p.m. at the Stoneledge Plantation Apartments at the corner of Roper Mountain Road and Garlington Road. The Boiling Springs Fire Department said 16 apartments were burned and two other buildings were damaged by heat.
