Seattle sees alarming spike in fires as dry conditions fuel streak of blazes

VIDEO: As communities around the Puget Sound go through their fourth straight day of high heat, the threat of wildfires remains high. Once-green landscapes are now shades of brown as grass and shrubs continue to die of thirst. And now, dry conditions have led to a string of fires in the past week, building off an already busy July.

East Pierce crews investigate barn, airplane hangar fire near Buckley

VIDEO: Crews are investigating what caused a barn and airplane hangar to catch fire in Unincorporated Buckley Wednesday night. According to East Pierce Fire and Rescue (EPFR), shortly before 10 p.m., crews were dispatched to a barn that caught fire near the corner of Sumner-Buckley Hwy E and Kelly Lake Rd.

One month after deadly Alabama fire station attack, no arrests made, Station 9 remains closed

Study Uncovers Gaps in Skin Cancer Prevention Among Volunteer Firefighters

A study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine found that among volunteer firefighters in the United States, there are gaps in skin cancer prevention efforts. Among firefighters, rates of melanoma incidence and mortality are higher than that of the general population. This can be attributed to excess occupational exposure to ultraviolet rays and cancer-causing agents found in flame retardants.
