Mercer Island Fire Station 92 Earns National Architectural Award

The City of Mercer Island was recently notified that the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has recognized its rebuilt Fire Station 92 with a national award, presented to project architects Miller Hull Partnership. The AIA intends its prestigious award program “to highlight exemplary projects that show the world the range of outstanding work architects create and highlight the many ways buildings and spaces can improve our lives.

San Juan Island firefighters honored

The San Juan Island Fire Department celebrated another year of service at their annual banquet at Downriggers, Saturday, January 20, 2018. As part of the festivities, Chief Brad Creesy presented many members with awards and recognition for their dedication to the department. In addition, five members were recognized for their dedication to Public Education, including school visits, the safety fair, and fire extinguisher training.

Spokane Valley Boy becomes pen pals with firefighter heroes

11-year-old Mason Allen a fifth grader who falls on the autism spectrum scale from Spokane Valley caught the attention of firefighters across America from Kennebunk Port, Maine all the way to Anchorage, Alaska. But Mason never had the chance to meet his pen-pal hero. 38-year-old Garrett Paiz, a firefighter from Noel, Missouri, reached out to Mason in March 2017, after seeing our story about Mason, since then the two had been in contact talking almost every week, "We would talk to each other on Facebook messenger back and forth," said Mason.

Fire truck on fire briefly closes portion of I-74 in Knox County

The road was shut down briefly as crews came to put out the fire, the police said.  There were no injuries.

Fire destroys Normal firetruck on I-74 in Knox County

The three Normal firefighters present attempted to extinguish the blaze while they called 911 to respond, but were unsuccessful. It appeared most of the cab was intact, but much of the rest of the truck was claimed by the fire.

“Looked like it may have started near one of the rear wheels, so maybe a brake or tire issue,” Barnett said.

“It’s 14 years old. Not a huge dollar loss, but we’re going to miss it,” Barnett said.

No one was injured in the fire and Normal had insurance on the vehicle. The truck was hauled back to Alexis Fire Equipment.
