Burlington: Bay View students deliver handmade cards for first responders

Although the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks occurred before the fifth-graders in Todd Hausman’s class at Bay View Elementary School were born, he wants his students to know how those events changed the world as many Americans knew it. “(It’s really important) to remember 9/11 and make sure that students understand that that was such a significant day in our history,” Hausman said.

Small roof fire briefly burns at Seatte's U-District apartment complex

A fire broke out briefly on the rooftop of the TraVigne on Eleventh Avenue, an apartment building, Wednesday afternoon. The Seattle Fire Department was dispatched to the building at 3:57 p.m. and had extinguished the fire by 4:24 p.m. according to Kristin Tinsley, a spokesperson for the Seattle Fire Department.

Indiana fire captain dies during training exercise

A captain with the Fort Wayne Fire Department died overnight. Jeremy Bush, president of the Fort Wayne Professional Firefighters, told NewsChannel 15 that Captain Eric Balliet was leading a training exercise at a commercial structure Wednesday night. Balliet was a 19-year veteran of the fire department.

Rhode Island governor vetoes firefighter disability bill

Gov. Gina Raimondo has vetoed a bill that would automatically give firefighters a lifetime tax-free accidental-disability pension if they develop a heart condition. Supporters of the bill – sponsored by Sen. Frank Lombardi, D-Cranston – argue it should be presumed that firefighters who have a stroke or heart disease suffered the ailment in the line of duty.
