Golf course maintenance building destroyed by fire in Bremerton

The maintenance building at a Bremerton-area golf course was destroyed by fire early Wednesday, but crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to a nearby home. Firefighters responded to the scene, the Rolling Hills Golf Course on NE McWilliams Road, at about 1 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire at the maintenance shop.

Archer Mountain fire in Skamania County 100 percent contained

The Archer Mountain Fire was declared 100 percent contained this morning and all evacuation notices have been lifted. Fire crews announced the containment was declared at 7 a.m. this morning. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office clarified that though the fire is contained, that doesn’t mean it’s completely controlled.

Blue Grouse Road Fire burning in Okanogan County

Okanogan County Emergency Management officials reported a wildfire burning north east of Oroville, Washington Wednesday morning. Okanogan County Emergency Management team member, Maurice Goodall, said the fire started from a house fire on Blue Grouse road in the Nine Mile area. Goodall said everyone who was in the home was safe, but the house was completely destroyed.

House Passes Bill to Develop Firefighter Cancer Registry

The US House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill Tuesday that would require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a registry of firefighters who develop cancer in an effort to study the risks they face on the job. The Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, introduced by Rep. Chris Collins, R-NY, would provide $2 million in federal funds from 2018 to 2022 for the CDC to gather and study data, including the status of a firefighter who developed cancer (volunteer or career, for example), the number of years spent on the job and the number and types of incidents they responded to.

Pennsylvania firefighter claims she was demoted because she's a mom

A female firefighter who claims she was demoted and told to stay home with her young son has filed a sex-discrimination lawsuit against the Lower Swatara Fire Department. Jessica Etzle contends in the U.S. Middle District Court suit that she was stripped of her post as lieutenant and told by the fire chief in January 2016 that, "'You have a 6-year-old son' and she needed to be home and be a mother to her son.
