Maryland county to hire 100 firefighters in wake of arbitration ruling

Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman said Wednesday she'll hire 100 firefighters now that the fire union has won an arbitration case dealing with firefighters' schedules. Neuman said she'll ask the County Council for $3 million to pay for the new firefighters and add fire training academy classes.

Texas city to sue former firefighters who were overpaid by $92,000

The City Council on Tuesday night is expected to approve taking two former Fort Worth firefighters to court in an attempt to recover more than $92,400 they were overpaid when they left their jobs. The payments were compensation for unused vacation, holiday and sick leave that workers were provided when they retired or left their jobs.

Cutting edge technology helps Arizona firefighters with early skin cancer detection

Firefighters are at an elevated risk of getting the deadly skin cancer, melanoma. In fact they are three times more likely to get it than the general population. That’s according to a recent study. But now cutting-edge technology has just arrived in Tucson to help protect our first responders. “The first time you hear somebody say you have cancer – it’s definitely a shocking thing,” Northwest Fire Deputy Chief, Ryder Hartley said.

Fire damages Vancouver home

Two adults, a child and a dog were displaced after a fire damaged a kitchen in the Harney Heights neighborhood Monday evening. Firefighters were called to a house fire at 3110 E. McLoughlin Blvd. around 6:45 p.m. Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Pete Adams said firefighters arrived to find a fire in the home’s kitchen.

Shuttered Flint (MI) Fire Station to Reopen in July

A south-side fire station is expected to open by the end of July, according to Flint Fire Chief Raymond Barton. City officials said in September that Station 8, on Atherton Road, would reopen after the city received a $3.767 million grant to hire 33 firefighters via the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, or SAFER, grant program.
The Flint Fire Department would increase from 54 firefighters to 87, Barton said. There also are 10 administrative positions within the department.

Firefighters per shift would be at 24, which is an increase from 14, Barton said.
