Virginia town's City Hall to be collateral in deal for emergency vehicles

City officials are being forced to turn to some unlikely heroes to make sure the city’s fire and EMS services receive much needed new vehicles. Because of the city’s financial crisis, officials are making a deal with private citizens who can front the cost for new emergency vehicles. In an interesting twist, the city is also willing to put up city hall as collateral for the deal, as an assurance to the lenders that they will get paid back.

Vancouver: Replacement fire station construction on schedule, budget

The project to replace two of the Vancouver Fire Department’s 10 stations is on budget and on schedule. According to city and district staff, the work should reduce emergency response times in west Vancouver when the buildings are occupied. City Facilities Capital Projects Manager Jon Sears told the city council Monday that the project is on schedule, but the starting date for operations at the new stations will depend on how easy it is to equip, furnish and connect to the county emergency dispatch center.

Shelby (OH) adds New Fire Apparatus

Fire Chief Mike Thompson said during Shelby City Council on Monday the truck purchase has been two years in the making, first initiated by retired Chief Scott Hartman and continued through acting Chief Jeff Burrer's term. It is now finally coming together. "We were lucky enough to see the end product," Thompson said.
The brush truck, known as Brush 36, was purchased jointly by the city of Shelby as well as Jackson Township and Sharon Township. The total cost of the truck and the accompanying equipment was $43,158; the city of Shelby paid $17,675 and Jackson and Sharon Township each paid $12,741.

Gateway (TN) Fire Station to be Located On Old Landfill

The Murfreesboro City Council will need to remove debris and grade a flood plain before a Gateway fire station can open at a closed landfill.
The elected officials will consider a $2.4 million "site work package" during a 7 p.m. Thursday meeting at City Hall, so The Parent Company, which is the "construction manager at risk" for the Gateway area fire station, can hire a low-bid contractor, according to a letter to the elected officials from Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Chief Mark Foulks.

“The Parent Company has bid the entire site work package and has estimated that the site work will be complete in approximately four months,” Foulks states in his letter.

Allentown (PA) Firefighters Say Fire Apparatus Shortage at "Crisis" Level

Allentown's firefighters made a public plea to City Council to invest in new firetrucks, saying a current equipment shortage has reached a "crisis" level. Keith Pierce, the city fire department's safety representative, said that as of this week, all of the city's reserve fire equipment has been moved to the front line because of break downs with other gear.
If one more fire truck breaks, the city will be forced to respond to fires with pickup trucks, Pierce said Wednesday. "We are essentially returning to material conditions that we were in nine years ago," he said.

Firefighter Adam Perreault told council that the fire department is the only city department without an approved equipment replacement plan even though the fire chief has repeatedly submitted one.
