Mayor Andrew J. Ginther has approved adding 25 fire recruits to the Columbus Fire Division by December to fill positions as more firefighters retire than had been expected.
The recruits are to keep staffing near its current level of about 1,580 firefighters, although the division will end the year with 10 more firefighters and paramedics than it had when the year began.

Monday, Wilmington Fire Chief Anthony Goode recounted the details of the events leading up to the deaths of two firefighters Saturday morning. 41-year-old Lieutenant Christopher Leach and 51-year-old Sr. Firefighter Jerry Fickes were killed responding to a house fire at 1927 Lakeview Road.
Firefighters responded to the house fire in Canby Park Saturday, September 24th, 2016, after receiving a call at 2:54 a.

When a wildfire is rolling toward a house built with a cedar shake roof, surrounded by decorative juniper up to the windowsills, and the only access road is overgrown and narrow, firefighters will likely skip it.
“People think that we’re going to save their house,” said Paul Tester, Southwest Washington’s fire training coordinator at the state Department of Natural Resources.

Nampa Fire Dept. Chief Karl Malott is in serious condition after a crash on Interstate 84 near Sand Hollow Saturday afternoon.
Idaho State Police say the Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by Malott, 53, rear-ended a red sedan on the eastbound side of I-84. The impact threw Malott off of his motorcycle.

An FDNY battalion chief was killed and several others — including six police officers and nine other firefighters — were injured when a marijuana-growing operation inside a Bronx house exploded early Tuesday, officials and sources said.
Michael Fahy of Battalion 19, a 17-year member of the FDNY, was struck in the head by part of the roof that blew off the private home at 300 W.
