The smoke from the Suncrest Fire provided an eerie backdrop, the visible evidence of a fire that has scorched 496 acres northeast of Leavenworth. The wind helped it spread quickly and then it began a steady march up the tinder dry hillside. It provided lots of hot, dirty work for some 300 firefighters.

More than a week after the Spokane Complex Fire began, firefighters have the blaze almost completely contained. Monday morning, crews announced both parts of the wildfire – Wellesley and Yale Road – were essentially completely contained. The Wellesley Fire is 100 percent contained and the Yale Fire is 99 percent contained, up 4 percent from Sunday.

A Benton Fire District 1 support vehicle was heavily damaged Sunday when it was hit by an SUV while on its way to a collision scene, authorities said. Battalion Chief Donald J. Taylor was driving the truck, a 1999 Ford F250, which was marked and had its siren on and lights flashing, authorities said.

Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue Chief John Sinclair was installed Aug. 18 as president and chairman of the board of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), pledging to “shine a light” on several important challenges facing the fire and emergency service, according to a news release from the association.
