Binghamton’s new central fire station is preparing to start answering calls soon, binghamtonhomepage.com reported.
The new central station located on Court Street downtown is expected to be fully staffed in the coming days. There is already a fire truck stationed there and some personnel working in the building, the report said.
The $6.5 million, 20,000-square-foot facility features five bays with a drive-through design, allowing fire trucks and other emergency response vehicles to enter from the rear and exit out onto Chapman Street, not far from Mirabito Stadium, according to the report.
The headquarters for Binghamton Fire also boasts bunk areas for firefighters, a kitchen and dining area, and a decontamination room to prevent hazardous toxins from spreading, the report said.
A groundbreaking ceremony took place in August 2021. A spokesperson for the city says an official opening date has yet to be set, the report said.

The city of Jacksonville broke ground Tuesday on a new fire station that will have a big impact on the area, jdnews.com reported.
Jacksonville Mayor Sammy Phillips and the Jacksonville City Council held the groundbreaking ceremony at the new site for Jacksonville Fire Station 4, located at 1252 Marketplace Drive. The 5.11-acre plot is city-owned land, part of Jacksonville Commons, and has been cleared in preparation for construction, according to a Monday news release from the city.
The release said the city council allocated the acreage for the new fire station to provide a central service location and to gain easy access to Western Boulevard with the goal of continuing to provide swift emergency response to residents.
Fire Station 4 will have a similar footprint to Fire Station 2, which is located across from Jacksonville High School, the release added. The project has a total cost of about $8 million, Phillips said at Tuesday’s groundbreaking and is expected to be complete in the spring.
