Firefighting in 2016: BCFD Chief Looks At the Evolution of Technology and Practice for Firefighters

Custom engineered tanker trucks and flame-resistant fire suits are the state of the art in firefighting circa 2015, but Blount County Fire Chief Doug McClanahan says many of the technological changes that have benefited firefighters most over the years have little to do with burning buildings.

McClanahan says it’s also easier to fight a fire in Blount County today than it was, say, 40 years ago, for the simple reason that the county has more in the way of physical and financial resources.

When he began in 1977, McClanahan says there were only 10 fire hydrants in non-incorporated regions of Blount County. Now, as the population has grown, the tax base has increased, and local water utilities have expanded their infrastructure, there are literally hundreds of hydrants available for BCFD firefighters when they head out on a call.

As to firefighting equipment, McClanahan shakes his head when he considers the changes that have taken place during his own lifetime. He still remembers a time, some decades back, when fire trucks were essentially do-it-yourself propositions. There were no corporate manufacturers making trucks specifically for the needs of firefighters.

An employee logged onto the website on Saturday morning and noticed that users clicking on a portion of the page were redirected to content he described as “inappropriate,” Gillespie said. The fire chief was in the office for a seminar at the time and was informed of the incident right away.

Lack of North Carolina volunteer firefighters could increase insurance costs

Despite trying for a year to increase the number of volunteer firefighters on its roster, the Elkin Fire Department is seeing little reward to its recruiting efforts. If the department falls below 20 members on its roster, it could mean an increase in property owners’ fire insurance rates, and as of just more than a week ago, the roster had 21 members.

FDNY to spend $5M to reduce EMS response times

After EMS response times for life-threatening emergencies jumped by more than 20 seconds last year, the FDNY plans to spend $5 million on two pilot programs to handle what it calls a record number of emergency calls. Starting this summer, the FDNY plans to use 10 “fly cars” — fire supervisor SUVs carrying a paramedic — to emergencies in the Bronx ahead of ambulances, fire officials told the Daily News on Monday.
