South Dakota among first with new 911 system

South Dakota is on the leading edge for 9-1-1 dispatch services with a new network that will link all dispatch centers in the state, and Mitchell was among the first to implement the new technology. Dispatch centers, officially known as public safety answering points, around the state are implementing a system called Next Generation 9-1-1, which is a system of hardware, software, data and operational policies that includes a statewide digital telephone system and an IP-based network that links all dispatch centers together.

Dog, cat killed in Spokane Valley apartment fire

Spokane Valley firefighters quickly knocked down a fire at the Aspen Village apartment complex Sunday evening. No one was hurt, but a dog and a cat in the unit where the fire started were killed. Firefighters say the fire started around 4:30 p.m. on the first floor. No one was home at the time. Crews are still trying to estimate the cost of the damage to the apartment, but they say the apartment is safe aside from the one unit where the fire started.

Fire destroys garage in Algona

VIDEO: A garage caught fire on Sunday afternoon in Algona, Wash. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire -- but the garage was destroyed. A racing vehicle inside of the garage was also destroyed. No one suffered injuries. Valley Regional Fire officials were assisted by members of South King Fire and Rescue.
