A team of juvenile inmates helping the firefight in eastern Washington was pulled from the fire line Monday after one of the troubled teens escaped and tried to take his own life. A team of 20 juvenile inmates from the Nesalle Youth Camp had been part of a program working alongside the Department of Natural Resources, helping bring Washington's relentless fires under control.

Two thieves in Stevens County picked an unlikely target Monday morning: the firefighters at Stevens County Fire District 7. A toddler is in critical condition after an early-morning house fire in Brooklyn. The flames broke out around 1 a.m. on Avenue P in Marine Park, and it was placed under control about 45 minutes later. Jean Pierre lost his home, but his family is still intact.
