Corrales (NM) Fire Department Fire Truck Stolen and Recovered After Chase

A Corrales (NM) Fire Department apparatus was stolen and recovered Tuesday after a tire blew as police pursued it, according to a report published by KOB4.

According to the report, the mini pumper was on a medical call when a 35-year-old man allegedly jumped in it and took off. Shortly after the truck was taken police and other agencies plastered alerts and photos on social media pages and tips poured in, the report said.

Within minutes, police were told the stolen truck was spotted in nearby Albuquerque speeding with its light and sirens on, the report said, noting the stolen fire truck traveled on to I-40.

Nearly two hours after the truck disappeared from the scene, Laguna police deployed a spike strip blowing out a front tire, according to the report, causing the driver to pull over near mile marker 108.

Police then arrested the driver, Dennis Chavez and charged him with fourth-degree felony car theft, resisting arrest and criminal damage to property, according to the report.

Authorities are grateful no one was hurt during the incident, including the driver and are baffled why the suspect took the vehicle in the first place, according to the report.
