Commentary: Keeping the flames at bay when there’s just one way out in a wildfire

Darren Higashiyama gets paid to dwell on worst-case scenarios. This time of year, when lightning flashes over tinder-dry forests and canyons dotted with cabins and campgrounds, the thought of a blocked wildfire evacuation route can keep him up at night. “All you need is one jack-knifed trailer and it screws up everything,” Higashiyama, emergency management coordinator for the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office, said in an interview from Ellensburg, Washington.

Man arrested for manslaughter after deadly Seattle apartment fire

VIDEO: Police arrested a man for manslaughter in connection to a deadly apartment fire in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood last July. According to the Seattle Police Department (SPD), firefighters responded on July 10 at around 2 a.m. to an apartment fire on First Avenue and Vine Street. Crews immediately evacuated people in the building and started extinguishing the fire.

Flooded New York firehouse doesn't stop firefighters during storm

VIDEO: Firefighters in Port Jefferson battled heavy rains to get people to safety earlier this week - all while its own firehouse was flooded. Screenshots shared to Facebook show submerged gear and equipment, estimated to be thousands of dollars in damages. The department tells News 12 that at no point was its ability to answer emergency calls impacted, and the cleanup process is already underway.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is saddened to learn of the passing of the Honorable Bill Pascrell Jr., the Representative of New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District. First elected to Congress in 1996, the Congressman was a longtime co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. Congressman Pascrell was an unwavering champion of our nation’s fire and emergency services.

45-year missing person's case solved by Kentucky fire chief, family gets closure

VIDEO: A Virginia family gets closure 45 years later after their loved ones' remains have been identified and returned following the remains being found in the Kentucky River. It was a normal training exercise for the Lexington Fire Department on October 22, 2016. Several dive teams spent the day removing vehicles from the Kentucky River off Old Tates Creek Road near Valley View Ferry.
