Davenport (IA) Fire Department Celebrating 140 Years with Open Houses

The Davenport Fire Department is celebrating its 140th year, and to celebrate the department is holding a series of open houses.

The hour-and-a-half events will run from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month, beginning this weekend and running through October 8.

“The Davenport Fire Department is proud to be a progressive department, but we want to remember and celebrate our heritage,” said Chief Mike Carlsten, Davenport Fire Chief. “The majority of the time, the community only sees the Fire Department when we are responding to incidents. These Open Houses will give the community a chance to talk with the firefighters, learn about the Davenport Fire Department, and the work these firefighters do every day.”

The schedule is as follows:

  • April 9: Station 3, 3506 Harrison St.
  • May 14: Station 4, 1805 East Locust St.
  • June 11: Station 5, 2808 Telegraph Road
  • July 9: Station 6, 1735 West Pleasant St.
  • August 13: Station 7, 2302 West 67th St.
  • September 10: Station 8, 2802 East 53rd St.
  • October 8: Central Station, 331 Scott St.

“Join us at Station Three to kick off this celebration! The year 2022 marks the 140th year of Davenport Fire Department as a paid fire department. In celebration, the Davenport Fire Department is hosting Fire Station Open Houses. The hour and a half events will run 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month beginning April 9th through October 8th.

“In 1882, the Davenport City Council authorized the formation of a municipal fire department, and this was the formal creation of the Davenport Fire Department.

Open House attendees can enjoy snacks, tour the stations, and meet Davenport firefighters. There will be information about the history of the Davenport Fire Department, the functions of each Davenport Fire Station, and pictures of the new Station 3 being built on 42nd and Brady Street in 2023.

The Giving of Pelham (Ontario) Rescue 1

The Pelham Fire Department’s Rescue 1 will soon be a Little Burnt—which is a good thing, in this case.

In lieu of the scrapyard, the fire truck is being donated to the Little Burnt Bay community.

The fire truck, packed with equipment from myriad neighboring departments, will make the 30-hour drive and then take an eight-hour ferry trip to its new home. Little Burnt Bay is a coastal community in Newfoundland with a population of about 350 people.

Fort Erie, Haldimand County, Lincoln, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls, St Catharines, Thorold, Wainfleet, and Welland all donated equipment, according to a report in thestar.com. The donated equipment includes SCBA gear, rapid intervention team packs, 70 lengths of 50-foot hose, hose nozzles and valves, extrication tools, helmets, bunker gear, CPR training mannequins, and more.

Officials say Fort Erie sent a pumper to Newfoundland last year, and Pelham has made a similar donation to a northern Ontario department as well as sent supplies to Ukraine, the report notes.

Franklin (OH) Fire Apparatus Hit at Scene of Crash; One Dead

One person is dead and another is seriously injured following a crash with a Franklin City Fire Department truck Thursday evening, reports wdtn.com.

Highway patrol officials were investigating another accident on I-70 north involving a tractor-trailer and a vehicle, while a department fire truck was parked in the left lane with its emergency lights activated, the report says.

Nineteen-year-old Dominique Horton, in her silver Chevrolet Cruze, then collided with the back of the apparatus, which killed her and left her passenger, 21-year-old Taylor Smith, in the hospital with serious injuries. Officials say neither party was wearing their seat belt; they suspect that excessive speed and alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the crash.

Four crew members were inside the fire truck at the time of impact, though the report notes that none of them were injured.

ARFF Training at NJ’s Teterboro Airport

Have you ever wondered what kind of equipment ARFF teams stationed at smaller airports use to train? Well, CBS2 has a segment for you!

The news station did a dive into NJ’s Teterboro Airport, which averages about 500 flights a day. The segment notes that fire service for smaller planes requires unique training. One such piece of equipment is a general aviation aircraft simulator, which is a prop plane filled with fake smoke and a video screen displaying fire.
