Duo saves man from burning Kent home, later learn he's suspected arsonist

A Kent man went from fire victim to arson suspect Thursday after police say he set fire to his apartment and needed rescuing from strangers. Police say Ishmail A. Brown set the blaze at the Lake Fenwick Estates, 24849 46th Ave S., Thursday morning. Two men who live nearby saw the fire and tried to rescue Brown, said Kyle Ohashi, a spokesman for the Kent Fire Department.

Yakima Firefighters see increase in response calls

Yakima firefighters responded to an increased number of calls in 2015. "Our guys are out there all the time, constantly responding to take care of you," Yakima Fire Department Spokesperson Capt. Jeff Pfaff said. Last year, Yakima firefighters responded to nearly 9,000 service calls. That's 1,300 more than in 2014, and around 750 more than in 2013.

Diesel tank fire near Granger caused by welding sparks

Yakima County fire investigators are blaming sparks from a welding job for a diesel tank fire near Granger Thursday morning. It happened at Yakima Valley Highway and Nelson Road. Investigators say while the welder was working, sparks ignited the fuel in the nearby tank. It took firefighters about an hour to put out the fire because some logs also caught fire.
