Virginia law is meant to take care of firefighters with cancer — but it’s not working the way it should

Firefighters have long complained that a state law meant to assure their bills are paid when they get work-related cancers isn’t helping the way it should. And a state review says they’re right. The law says that when firefighters get leukemia as well as breast, pancreatic, prostate, rectal and throat cancers, they should be presumed to be the result of their work.

Several dumpsters set afire around Seattle Tuesday night

Seven dumpsters set ablaze across Seattle Tuesday night have fire investigators busy trying to solve who might be the arsonist. The first fire broke out at 9:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Madison just behind the Hotel Sorrento. Reports would continue to come in of burning dumpsters around the city over the next hour, including outside Peter Miller Books & Supplies in Pioneer Square, Seattle Fire officials said.

Benton County firefighter loses home to fire while on vacation with family

A Benton County firefighter, and his family, are without a home after their furnace caught fire and completely damaged the inside of their Kennewick house on Monday. Aaron Fryer is a Station Captain for Benton County Fire District 1. He has been a volunteer firefighter for about five years. Aaron and his family were on vacation in Nevada when their furnace caught fire.

Commercial Fire Between Two Chelan County Businesses, Put Out Primarily By Sprinkler System

Chelan County Fire District 1 was dispatched to a commercial fire a little after 9 a.m. at the corner of 5th and Mission. Locals may know the area as the strip of businesses such as Garlinis, Jimmy Johns and others. “Crews arrived to find light smoke coming from a vacant occupancy as well as the EarthWise pet store,” said Chief Brian Brett.

One missing after residential fire in Brinnon

One person is missing and a second escaped following a residential fire early Tuesday morning. Five fire departments responded at about 1:15 a.m. to a three-story house fire near U.S. Highway 101 at milepost 312, Brinnon Fire Chief Tim Manly said. Units from Brinnon, Mason County Fire District 17, Quilcene Fire Rescue, Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue and Discovery Bay Fire Rescue were dispatched, he said.
