Other equipment upgrades expected to increase signal connection, safety NORTH SMITHFIELD - A new arrival has made its way into town in the form of a brand new fire engine housed at the St. Paul Street Fire Station.
According to North Smithfield Fire and Rescue Services Chief David Chartier, the $550,000 engine arrived the day before Thanksgiving to replace a 17-year-old engine previously based out of the St. Paul Street Station. The new arrival brings the town’s total fire engine fleet to three, with two frontline engines and the old engine kept on at St. Paul Street Station as a spare.
Facility is located on County Road 5500 in West Hammond SAN JUAN COUNTY - Officials celebrated the opening of the newest San Juan County Fire Station Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, cake and cookies. The $1 million fire station located on County Road 5500 in the West Hammond area southwest of Bloomfield is the second station serving District 6, which is the Lee Acres District.
The new station will serve about 8,000 people in the West Hammond area.
District 6 has received approximately 1,200 calls for service over the last year, according to County Commission Chairwoman Margaret McDaniel.

The Des Plaines Fire Department will be purchasing hose bridges that allow vehicles to drive over and not damage water hoses at a fire scene thanks to a grant from Illinois American Water (IAW). This grant funding will be used for the purchase of collapsible bridges that keep the water hoses intact while they are fighting fires and cars need to pass through.
The IAW 2018 Firefighter Grant Program provides financial assistance to fire and emergency organizations serving communities in its service areas. This year, approximately $77,000 will be awarded to 78 Illinois fire departments. Since the program was created in 2010, over 500 grants totaling over $493,000 has been awarded to fire and emergency organizations serving customers in Illinois American Water's service area.
