Hampton Township's fire and police departments are to merge into a public safety model, where firefighters and officers are crossed trained to do both jobs.
The township's Board of Trustees on Monday, Oct. 1, approved the partial transition from two agencies into one, said Supervisor Terri Close. Six board members voted in favor of the proposal, while one voted against it.

Kirk Robinson, a local firefighter and lifelong Mercer Islander, is battling stage 4 cancer. But Robinson, a lieutenant with the Bothell Fire Department, doesn’t look - or act - like you might imagine, and now he’s fighting for a bigger cause.
In early 2017, Robinson felt a lump on his side, and was soon diagnosed with stage 3 (now, stage 4) cancer - metastatic melanoma.

They usually answer emergency calls in front of a computer, but Yakima is now sending out Suncomm 911 dispatchers into the field as technical support when needed.
“So instead of them concerning about what resources they have or what resources they have available, it's our job to keep track of that and relay that information to them as needed,” Cameron Haubrich with SunComm said.
