In the final spring and summer of Washington’s territorial era, big fires ravaged major sections of downtowns on both sides of the Cascades, from Seattle, to Ellensburg, to Spokane. Seattle’s fire struck on the breezy, blue-sky afternoon of Thursday, June 6, 1889.

Officials responded to a railroad trestle fire in Grays Harbor Saturday morning, according to the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office.
At about 3 p.m. on June 3, deputies went to a fire on railroad tracks near State Route 12 at milepost 26 in Malone, about halfway between Olympia and Aberdeen.
When deputies arrived, they found a train trestle that runs parallel to State Route 12 was on fire with heavy smoke covering the road.

A fire at a Tacoma apartment sent two residents to the hospital and left five firefighters hurt Monday night.
At about 9:15 p.m. officers responded to a report of an apartment fire on Pacific Avenue. When crews arrived at the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a second floor unit.

A man died after being trapped inside as a fire completely engulfed his two-story house near Spanaway on Monday.
Crews from Central Pierce Fire and Graham Fire were sent to 199th Street Court East, between Spanaway and Elk Plain, around 7 a.m. after the fire was reported by a passerby.
Central Pierce Fire and Rescue said arriving crews found the two-story home fully engulfed in flames.

Fire crews in Birmingham are currently investigating the cause of a major fire of a church in Ensley. The incident took place at the intersection of Five Points West Avenue and Avenue S. No injuries have been reported.
Local resident and Ensley Highlands neighborhood president, Antwon Womack, shed light on the history of the church, describing it as a community pillar in the past.
