On May 22, 1964, heavy, black smoke could be seen all over Cedar Rapids, coming from the mega fire that was consuming a one-story warehouse at 1201 Ninth St. SW.
The fire that destroyed the Cedar Rapids Transfer & Storage Co. warehouse ranked “as one of the worst in Cedar Rapids history,” The Gazette reported.

A new skin infection seemingly never detected before in the United States has been detected in at least two patients in New York City, and more cases are under review, federal health officials say.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified a "drug-resistant" infection responsible for causing severe ringworm cases in two women.

With temperatures in the Inland Northwest already starting to heat up and brush already starting to dry out, Spokane County Fire District 10 (SCFD 10) is preparing for an active fire season.
"Not just in District 10 but all around the region, things are already starting to pick up," SCFD 10 Deputy Chief Andres Steevens said in an interview on Monday.

Fire officials are sounding the alarm as brush fires have already started in the area, much earlier than usual. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources reports over this past weekend, more than 200 acres burned.
Puget Sound Fire is now investigating a Black Diamond brush fire that consumed two and a half acres Sunday.

A massive fire erupted in a Pompano Beach apartment building overnight.
Residents of the Royal Atlantic Apartments, at 110 NW 7th Avenue, said they woke to fire alarms blaring around 2 a.m. and heard people screaming.
Arriving firefighters were met with flames shooting through the roof and thick smoke coming from one the units.
