It took 14 firefighters to move the 800-pound dining table from the old 5,116-square-foot fire station on Maple Road to the newly constructed $4 million, 10,500-square-foot Fire Station 4 next door.
Troy Fire Station 4 Lt. Shawn Hugg joked that the station was designed around the table.
During budget sessions in the spring of 2015, when the project was first considered, then-Fire Chief William Nelson, who passed away this spring, told the council that Station 4 is the second-busiest fire station in the city and the only one to house a heavy rescue unit. The station was built in 1968 and was expanded in 1988. The former station was the smallest fire station in the city.
During the grand opening for the new Fire Station 4 Aug. 22, Troy City Manager Brian Kischnick said Nelson would be proud. Station 4 is dedicated to Nelson.
