Wrecked AFD Pumper Won't Be Replaced

AFD Chief Ron Peebles and Mayor Jim Staff each confirmed that an Atmore Fire Department pumper, totaled while on its way back from a Dec. 31 structure fire, won't be replaced. However, all its vital equipment and parts will be salvaged for application to what had served as the department's reserve unit.

“We don’t really need (a replacement),” Peebles said. “We’ve got one truck that we hardly ever use, and it needs a lot of the things on the wrecked one, so we’ll take what we can off the wrecked one and use it for that one.”

Staff said the only holdup on stripping the totaled pumper and possibly selling it for scrap was a settlement with the city’s insurance carrier.

“It’s a good thing we had a spare,” the mayor agreed. “We’ll take the tires, pump and all the good stuff off the one that was wrecked. Of course, we haven’t settled with the insurance company yet, but the wrecked truck has good tires and the best pump we’ve got. That pump is the most important thing; it costs $700 to $800 just to have it tested. We can’t take that stuff off until the insurance claim is settled, though.”

McLean Volunteers Aim to Restore Classic Fire Engine

The McLean Volunteer Fire Department's nearly half-century-old fire engine graces about 40 community events each year, but now needs restoration and repairs. Department leaders are reaching out to the public in hopes of raising $55,000 to bring the vehicle back to excellent condition. Donations can be made at www.mcleanvfd.org.

The department bought the engine, a model AT41 made by Peter Pirsch & Sons in Kenosha, Wisc., in 1970. The engine, the department’s first diesel-powered apparatus, had an eight-cylinder Cummins engine and a five-speed manual transmission with overdrive, said former McLean Volunteer Fire Chief Clyde Clark.

“Diesel engines last longer,” he said. “We weren’t worried at the time about fuel costs or carbon footprint.”

The bright-red engine is a showpiece now, but it went out on every single fire call until the organization bought a newer engine in 1979.

Norwalk Fire Department Lands $43K for Thermal-Imaging Cameras

Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal announced that the city of Norwalk had been awarded a $43,619 Assistance to Firefighters Grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Firefighters use the cameras to see through darkness or smoke and search for victims, according to a statement released by the three Democratic lawmakers Thursday afternoon.

“This federal funding will allow the Norwalk Fire Department to replace old, dated equipment,” Blumenthal said in the statement. “Firefighters are constantly putting their lives on the line to save others, and the least we can do is ensure they are equipped with the most up-to-date technology and resources needed to do their jobs safely and effectively. I congratulate the Norwalk Fire Department on this new grant and thank the courageous firefighters for protecting the people of Norwalk.”

Earlier, Mayor Harry W. Rilling and Acting Fire Chief Gino Gatto joined Blumenthal at the Central Fire Station on Connecticut Avenue to announce the grant award. Gatto said the department plans to replace its four oldest, non-National Fire Protection Association-compliant cameras. Each is about 15 years old.

“These new cameras will provide a superior image quality, which will enable our firefighters to fully interpret a fire scene and make better, more informed tactical decisions,” Gatto said in the statement. “The Norwalk Fire Department is grateful for the awarding of this AFG grant. The city of Norwalk will see a substantial savings in this purchase.”

Donation to FSW Helps Purchase Training Ambulance

Florida SouthWestern State College recently utilized a $25,000 donation to purchase their own training ambulance for the school's Collier County campus. According to Teresa Araque, FSW's Communications Director, the donor requested that the funds be earmarked for the school's Emergency Medical Services Technology Program which trains students seeking paramedic or EMT certifications.

The ability to learn to operate inside an actual ambulance further enhances the school’s already state of the art training, Araque indicated.

“We have one of the most sophisticated simulation ER centers on our Collier campus in the world,” said Araque. “The simulated patients in their can react almost like humans, it’s pretty impressive to see.”

Joe Washburn, the director of the Emergency Services Program, explained that the ambulance would allow students to train in the complicated process of safely transferring a downed patient as well as teaching them how to work in the compact and moving environment of an emergency response vehicle.

“This ambulance means that our EMTs and paramedics can have hands-on experience with treating and then transporting patients in an ambulance,” said Washburn. “They graduate with not only the classroom knowledge they need but also the hands-on experience that makes them instrumental in saving lives in our community.”
