Columbia Gorge wildfire forces hundreds from homes

A wildfire that forced hundreds of people from their homes Sunday in the Columbia River Gorge is now 98 percent contained, officials said Monday. "We knew there was a fire around," said John Belanger of Wishram, Washington. "We didn't know where." The Horsethief Butte Fire started north of Dallesport, Washington around noon Sunday.

Everett: Fire district captain again answers call to fight wildfires

Shaughn Maxwell knew he had to head home. A massive wildfire — which would become bigger and fiercer than any he had ever seen in 27 years as a firefighter — threatened the Methow Valley in rural Eastern Washington. It scorched much of his childhood stomping grounds, including a favorite spot along the Elbow Coulee where he used to sled in the winter.

Destructive California wildfire overruns residents, 4 firefighters burned

Homes and businesses burned as a fast-moving wildfire fueled by heat and winds exploded in Lake County, forcing thousands to flee and leaving four firefighters with burns. The small town of Middletown was particularly hard-hit, with blocks of homes and other structures lost. Photos showed Middleton's main street on fire, with cars burning.
