A wildfire that forced hundreds of people from their homes Sunday in the Columbia River Gorge is now 98 percent contained, officials said Monday.
"We knew there was a fire around," said John Belanger of Wishram, Washington. "We didn't know where."
The Horsethief Butte Fire started north of Dallesport, Washington around noon Sunday.

Shaughn Maxwell knew he had to head home.
A massive wildfire — which would become bigger and fiercer than any he had ever seen in 27 years as a firefighter — threatened the Methow Valley in rural Eastern Washington.
It scorched much of his childhood stomping grounds, including a favorite spot along the Elbow Coulee where he used to sled in the winter.

Homes and businesses burned as a fast-moving wildfire fueled by heat and winds exploded in Lake County, forcing thousands to flee and leaving four firefighters with burns.
The small town of Middletown was particularly hard-hit, with blocks of homes and other structures lost. Photos showed Middleton's main street on fire, with cars burning.
