Vehicle destroyed, home threatened in brush fire near Ephrata

An about five-acre brush fire Wednesday morning destroyed a vehicle and threatened a home near Ephrata. Grant County Fire District 13 and Ephrata firefighters responded about 11 a.m. to a controlled burn that had gotten out of control in the 12800 block of Road A.5 Northwest, about five miles south of Ephrata.

Elderly woman hurt, 4 pets killed in Cowlitz County fire

An elderly woman was hospitalized and 4 family pets died when a Cowlitz County home caught fire Wednesday morning, officials said. A woman who lives in the home on the 100 block of Yelton Drive said she was woken up when she heard an explosion just after 4 a.m., Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue said. The woman said she got her elderly mother out of the house and called for help.

Accidental fire caused by cigarette burns down building in Pullman

Pullman Fire Department released a statement Wednesday night saying an accidental fire caused by a discarded cigarette burned down a two story duplex. Fire crews were called to a duplex on Northwest Sunrise Drive after a neighbor told 911 operators that he could see flames and smoke coming from the upper unit of the house.

Crews train to battle wildfires by air with helicopters in Cle Elum

The Cle Elum airport became a staging ground for helitack training for the Washington State Deparrtment of Resources Wednesday. DNR grew its fleet to eight helicopters last season, and this season has added an additional two pilots. "Helitack" means using helicopters and their crews to attack fires.

Richland Firefighter replaces childhood inspiration as new captain

While one Richland Fire Department Captain is retiring, another is taking his place...but they share a special moment from the new captain's childhood. It started when Capt. Joe DeRousie was 10 years old at a charity basketball game. "I was just doing some organizing, cleaning out some boxes, going through the garage," he said.
