Seattle mayor, police and fire chiefs meet with activists -- away from protesting crowds

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and police Chief Carmen Best met behind closed doors Wednesday with demonstrators who have been participating in protests that have gripped the city. The meeting came one day after Durkan addressed a sizable crowd of protesters and pledged to meet with their representatives in order to forge consensus in the wake of the death of George Floyd, who died nine days ago at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers.

FIre damages home in Yakima

A fire displaced the residents of a home on South 14th Street and caused $70,000 damage Tuesday night. Firefighters were called to 805 S. 14th St. around 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, and found a fire burning in the garage. It spread to the house as well, according to a fire department news release. Crews were able to put out the fire quickly, but the home’s residents were not able to go back that night and received assistance from the American Red Cross, the release said.

Follow Up: Snohomish County firefighter mourned after fatal accident while off-duty

It is with great sadness that Snohomish County Fire District 7 and North County Fire/EMS announce the unexpected passing of one of their own. Marcus Carroll passed away after falling off a cliff while hiking near Cle Elum, WA. He was 23 years old. Carroll was reported missing Sunday, May 31st after he did not return home from a day hiking trip.

New Jersey city facing $11 million in unused leave pay for retiring cops and firefighters

City officials are setting aside $11 million in their 2021 budget to cover unused leave time payments for police officers and firefighters who may retire during the coming year. About $6 million would cover retirement payments for 46 police officers eligible for retirement during the 2021 fiscal year, according to information provided during a city budget hearing last week.

3 killed after PG&E-contracted helicopter crashes in California; firefighters injured in engine rollover

Three people died after a helicopter crashed down into Solano County, officials said. A Bell 206 helicopter crashed near Lyon Road and Soda Springs Road around 1:30 p.m. near Fairfield, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Ian Gregor. PG&E spokesperson Brandi Merlo said the helicopter was contracted by PG&E.
