Man dies in Mount Vernon fire

A 74-year-old man died in a fire Saturday morning at the President Apartments in downtown Mount Vernon. According to a news release from the city of Mount Vernon, firefighters were dispatched to the apartments in the 300 block of Myrtle Street after a 911 call at 7:47 a.m. They arrived four minutes later.

VIDEO: 5 dead, several hurt in Pennsylvania house explosion

Five people were killed and several others injured in a house explosion Saturday in Plum, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The explosion destroyed three structures and damaged at least a dozen others, authorities said. A person who was initially unaccounted for after the explosion was among the five dead, officials said Sunday.

Former Massachusetts fire chief's invention changed firefighting in early 1900s

PHOTOS: New Bedford Fire Chief Edward F. Dahill changed the way firefighters fight fires. Dahill dedicated 59 years of service to the department from 1888 to 1947, and left behind an invention that made an extremely difficult job less difficult for all firefighters. He invented the first aerial ladder hoist, called the Dahill hoist, in 1902.

Driver of stolen truck switches to stolen ambulance, hitting multiple cars on chase from Virginia to DC, police say

VIDEOS: A Maryland man led police on a wild chase from behind the wheel of two different trucks and then a stolen ambulance Saturday afternoon, striking multiple vehicles across three different highways, police said. The suspect caused a multi-car crash on I-395 in a stolen truck before stealing an ambulance that was responding to the scene.

Forklift fire blamed for blaze at Olympic Fruit warehouse in Moxee

A forklift that caught fire near a propane tank at the Olympic Fruit warehouse west of Moxee is the cause of the blaze reported on Friday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the warehouse at State Highway 24 and Beaudry Road at about 3:50 pm Friday. When they arrived, everyone was out and no injuries were reported.
