The board of fire commissioners at Lacey Fire District 3 hunkered down Thursday, suggesting ways in which the district might raise its profile and increase community awareness during a special workshop.
The workshop was led by meeting facilitator J. Marie Riche, while the five-member commission — Tom Nelson, Sylvia Roberts, Judy Wilson, Gene Dobry and Frank Kirkbride — listened and provided comments.

Only weeks after suffering significant burns, a Spokane Fire Department fireman is back at work Thursday on light duty.
Getting back into the swing of things could not come fast enough for Chuck McKenzie.
“It’s great to be back in the station. It’s great with the guys, but getting back to the job is what I am looking forward to,” he said.

PHOTO: A truck tipped over on Capitol Hill Thursday morning while loading a dumpster filled with concrete and rebar.
The yellow truck was on its side on Boylston Avenue, between Prospect and Aloha streets, as firefighters were sent to the scene just before 9 a.m.
Eric Kaufman, who lives about 15 feet from where the truck flipped, said the truck had successfully loaded the dumpster but then it “swung off to the side and pulled the truck over.

The Anacortes Fire Department is implementing new procedures and adding new equipment to help reduce firefighters’ exposure to carcinogens.
The state Council of Fire Fighters recently released a best practices program to “encourage safe and healthy practices from the first day as a fire fighter to retirement.
